I don’t think it was secret. My understanding from people fairly in the know is
that Pope was very honest with ADs office about Kentucky. Not only would he take the job if ever he was offered, but that he would actively seek it.
Not sure whether it was just understood or whether he said it to them, but everyone ( Holmoe and Santiago) knew this.
