I used to work for the BYU MBA Program. We always wanted the best and brightest at BYU, but knew the ultra-top-tier MBA candidates would go to Wharton or Harvard. We would try to get them to stay home at BYU, but we didn't cry too hard when they ultimately chose a top 10 school. Why? Here's why:
1. Placing a solid LDS MBA candidate at a prestigious institution usually made that place better.
2. Their going to a prestigious institution opened a spot for another bright mind to join the BYU MBA program.
Pope to a blue-blood like UK is awesome! I wish him well. I would have absolutely done the same thing. After all, UK is his alma mater where he won a flipping natty. Good for him!
That opened up a cherry coaching opportunity that was filled by what seems to be one of the brightest, most talented basketball coaches in the country. Plus, with Young's impressive connections to NBA front offices and the respect he has around the league (see Danny Ainge's reaction to the news of BYU hiring him), we will likely see several BYU players at the next level in coming years. Plus, that's a heckuva recruiting pitch, "So your son wants the NBA, does he? Well, I might be able to help with that."
