always seemed to break down on vacations (FWIW, these were typically American and German-made cars with 100K+ miles that were built in the 1960s-1970s).

So I guess I'm paranoid and just don't want to take the risk.

I've had 4 Toyotas go over 300K and another go over 200K before we sold it. Why not take one or both into the Toyota

Toyotas are among the most reliable (if not the most reliable) vehicles one can get. Doesn’t mean they’re perfect.

Keep both cars and get a rental for longer trips. This way you can try out different cars on road trips
