having Sundays essentially off for him for life may be an appeal that he wouldn’t want to leave if he’s having success.
I commend him for prioritizing some things over fame and money that he will never get back if he loses it, like time with family. At BYU, he will have plenty of money, and he will be a legend at BYU if he has success. The bar is not that high, really. 2 NITs when it was different than today, and 1 elite eight run. Imagine if he ever got BYU to a final four. The whole fanbase would hold him in the highest regard. Contrast that with Pope, who, if he isn’t competing for a final four every year, they’ll run him out of town so fast, and he probably has only 2-3 years to get to that point.
First impression of Pope, he was going to chase the biggest opportunity he could find, and that’s what he did. Everyone said UK, but he also wanted the Arizona job when it opened up. First impression of Young, he left the path to the biggest opportunity, and prioritized a more work/life balance. Wouldn’t surprise me if he kept that priority for life. In my opinion, Dave Rose did the same thing, when Oklahoma and Houston were viable options.
