I think TH said that Brian Santiago has kept in touch with KY over the years. They interviewed KY in 2019 when Pope was hired. They said to themselves that KY was the guy to watch for the future.

TH said they have a succession plan for all the coaches, just in case they need it. Apparently KY was at the top of the list for basketball.

So they apparently knew that Pope was looking to take the UK job if it were to be offered. They were ready to move if Pope left. Which he did.

I think Kevin said that he found out Pope had taken the UK job so the BYU job had opened up. Minutes later he got the call from BS. They got TH on the call and they told Kevin he was their guy, they wanted him for the BYU head coach.

So it was fast moving and no fooling around.

Don't know when calls from Ainge and/or Smith to KY may have come. Both probably talked to him at some point.

Something like that anyway. Pretty impressive how the BYU AD office was right on top of it.
