There's risk there; love the hiring, but more measured than many here...except for one amazing factor

It's an exciting time and I absolutely can't blame anyone for anticipating the absolute best - it's a lot more enjoyable.

But I also worry that we're setting up unrealistic expectations for ourselves. All this talk of "He'll consistently recruit 4 stars and occasionally 5 stars, because he can tell them he knows what it takes to get to the NBA"? That seems a bit premature or over the top. Almost every college coach can talk about what it takes to get to the NBA whether by

  • Assistant coach experience in the NBA
  • Personally playing in the NBA
  • Developing college players into NBA players
  • Strong connections to front-office NBA personnel

And in many cases, multiple of those. Young is absolutely not unique in that regard.  Utah hired Jim Boylen as an in-demand former NBA assistant and we all saw how that went.

Now (and I probably should have said this earlier to head off the angry messages) none of this is to say that I dislike the hiring. Kevin Young is a fantastic hire and I'm extremely excited about it. But the truth is that there's always risk attached with a new coach and it absolutely could go terribly.

Given all that, even more than the hiring of Kevin Young, which I do like, what I'm REALLY excited about is the commitment (financial and otherwise) that BYU, Tom Holmoe, Ryan Smith, Danny Ainge etc are making to compete at the highest level and the resources they are putting towards that goal.

I like Young and hope/believe he'll work out great - but the bigger story is 100% the mindset to go and get him, even if it took a big swing. That's not historically been the BYU mindset and so I'm very excited to see it now
