team that was worthy of a single-digit seed.
In 2020, BYU was #13 in KenPom and was a projected #5 seed (Pomeroy typically lists actual seeds, but due to no tourney just put projected seeds - not sure how he made the projections)
In 2021, BYU was #20 in KenPom and a #6 seed in the NCAA tourney (lost to #11 UCLA in the 1st round)
In 2022, BYU was #58 in KenPom
In 2023, BYU was #77 in KenPom
In 2024, BYU was #18 in KenPom and a #6 seed in the NCAA tourney
What I am seeing there is that when able to build a solid core, Pope has been able to make BYU a top-20 regular season team - but has yet to prove he can win when it counts in the postseason. His 2022 and 2023 teams had a high amount of turnover and a low amount of roster continuity from the previous seasons.
Kevin Young, on the other hand has proven to be a very well respected NBA assistant with a good basketball mind. He seems to understand the importance of relationship building and recruiting. But he also has yet to show his ability to translate that into actual recruiting success (through no fault of his own). I'm optimistic that he will get there, but there is still a bit of a TBD as far as how his tenure as BYU head coach will turn out.
