Inflation over the decades does not appear to have hit video games at all. video game companies realized their sweet spot was $49.99 to $59.99 and it has been for decades.
I remember getting the original Zelda for my birthday. At the time, the game sold for $49.99. It may have been the most expensive game at the time. I don’t remember.
Short time later Tecmo Super Bowl came out. My parents wouldn’t buy it and I had to earn and spend my own money on it. Good lesson. It was $59.99. I don’t think I’d ever spent so much of my own money on a single item but I saved for months to buy it.
Today, new games retail for somewhere between $39.99 and $59.99. Even the most expensive ones like BOTW and TOTK don’t break the $60 barrier.
In todays dollars, Tecmo Super Bowl would have retailed at roughly $125. I’ve never seen a single game anywhere near that price.
I guess now games have in-play features encouraging you to buy things and stuff…but it just seems odd to me that 30 years ago parents could stomach paying $59.99 a game…and today…they still stomach paying $59.99 a game…which is a steal compared to 30 years ago.
