How do you small talk with someone suffering with substance abuse?
Scenario:
Freshly out of rehab. Had to take a crap job they don't like. Not a sports fan. Divorced and doesn't have anything going as far as a relationship. Had to move into family's basement.
You don't want to ask, "How's it going?" You know it's not going well. The better greeting is "Good to see you."
After the greeting, I'm not sure how to chit chat with them. "Fine weather we're having huh?"

You talk with them like any other human with flaws. Unfortunately for them, their flaws are more damaging and public
