I also use the Japanese word sukunai still and taught my wife that word and the way to use it and she uses it all the time now with me because it is so much more fitting and elegant than its translation because it encompasses more ideas in a succinct way. The english translation is clunky (few; a little; scarce; insufficient; seldom).
