A while ago I went to open a bank account at a new bank, the bank said I already
had an account - although I knew that I hadn't opened one. Turns out someone stole my identity to open an account - after review the bank suspected that it was an illegal immigrant that simply wanted a bank account but used my identity to do it. There had been no activity in the account for some time, and the bank froze the account as well. I assumed the money would be seized as evidence and go to some crime victims reparations fund or something.
A year or two later I got a call from the bank to take action to resolve/close the account and send me the balance, but whoever I was talking with had no idea about the history. I thought they would have flagged it but guess not so I explained the situation and also that I didn't want the money - it wasn't mine and I didn't want it to come back and bite me - like someone was going to come asking for it back. They seemed to understand and said they would look into it - I don't think they did. I got a few more similar calls in the next few months as if they never took notes and insisted I needed to take the balance, since after all it was my money. Long story short, my unknown illegal immigrant friend helped pay for $1,600 of new flooring in our townhouse.
