A number of reasons. The industry exploded during the pandemic and they over-hired and salaries skyrocketed.
In tech engineering, many salaries went up 40% from 20-23. So making games became incredibly expensive AND there is a TON of competition and so making a profit is much harder than before (and it was hard before). And there is a lot of consolidation around specific franchises that companies can just pump out. Roblox, Fortnite, Pub G, COD. for every Harry Potter or Elden Ring there are thousands of failing games right now.
