The cyclists are probably trying to reinforce the notion of the space they are supposed to have as required by law. In Utah for example, riders are supposed to have more than 3 feet of space from cars overtaking them.

Are drivers supposed to hate pedestrians too if they walk across the street outside of crosswalks?

All of us hate ignorant users of the road including cyclists and bad drivers. But the majority of us are doing things mostly the right way, a few bad actors make it bad for everyone.
