The west is stocked with great young teams and the Jazz have assets but currently not close to the same level of young talent and didn’t go all in on the full tank because Lauri was better than anticipated. They could be the 2nd worst team in the west next year with only Portland being worse.
I could see them making a mistake by trading for Tre Young, who is not a good enough two way player because he’s too small. I thought they made a mistakes on the JCs this past year. Neither one of them was going to help them win or lose enough and they ended up precisely at the top of the bottom third, not ideal. Two potentially bad contracts too.
I think they know they aren’t particularly close and won’t try and trade for players who don’t actually significantly move their win meter. But they probably feel that Lauri may not resign if they don’t do something. They still have to convey their pick if it’s not bad enough, in a better draft.
