Here's everything I've gathered on Chaz Lanier and my guess on our chances.
Chaz is considered the second best guard left in the transfer portal according to 247. He's got some major players going after him. The top schools going after him right now are Tennessee, Kentucky, Maryland, Villanova, Miami, Louisvile and Duke.

At one point, the top 3 school were Kentucky, Tennessee and Maryland, but more schools have offered him. Here's the argument for the top 3 schools.

Tennessee can pitch him as the next Dalton Knetch. Dalton should be a top 15 pick in this year's draft and was the leading scorer for Tennessee. Also, Lanier is from Nashville.

Kentucky would pitch him as their leading scorer. Pope has brought in a lot of solid guards, but none are as good in isolation as Lanier. He would become the top dog of the team. I don't know how that would gel with the other transfers Pope has already brought in. I don't think it's a perfect fit.

I don't know too much about Maryland's pitch but apparently insiders at Maryland thought they had the inside track on landing Lanier a week ago. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore as McCombs reported that Kentucky and Tennessee are the two favorites.

Here's a video discussion about the situation from a couple days ago. These guys don't seem to have any inside info, but I think it does reflect the normal college basketball fan's thoughts on the situation. They do not mention BYU as a serious contendor, but talk about other teams that would have a shot. (Mainly UK)

What does BYU have to do to land him?
According to McCombs, (link below) BYU has already had a Zoom meeting with Lanier and felt encouraged by the conversation. It sounds like KY's NBA pitch worked very well and Lanier has his sights set on getting to the NBA.

Lanier fits perfectly into BYU's starting lineup at the 2. That can't be said for most of the schools going after him. Most teams already have a projected starting lineup, for example Duke. At Duke, Lanier would be relegated to coming off the bench. IDK if coming off the bench is the right role to getting him to the NBA.

The second aspect is NIL. It was rumored that when Roach transfered to Baylor, he got 1.5 million in NIL, and other top tier transfer talent has hit the millions. IMO Lanier is going to get million dollar offers from some of these schools. McCombs said BYU is getting together a "competitive offer" for him. I don't know what to think of that. I doubt we can offer him millions of dollars, and it might take that to get him here.

The next step is to get Lanier to visit BYU. I believe KY's pedigree and connections can get Lanier to visit. If anyone was going to bring Lanier to BYU, it'd be KY and Dunson. Dunson is a proven recruiter, and KY's NBA pitch seems like the right type of pitch to land Chaz. If Lanier does come to BYU, it could be the start of the "NBA Pipeline" KY is wanting to build.

I don't believe our chances our high, but we'll see how it plays out.
