I can tell you what it can do to light skinned missionaries, over 2 years
After serving in South East Asia, during the 90s, when wearing sun block was not a really common practice, I have seen the effects on multiple missionaries I served with and myself. Sadly, one of my fellow returned missionaries, has been fighting a skin cancer battle that has taken most of his cheek, orbital bone, most of his nose, and almost his life. He had a small spot on his cheek, about the size of a pin head, that ended up with him waking up with his face completely unrecognizable.
It breaks my heart to see what he has had to battle, as he has had many additional surgeries, chemo, radiation, and other treatments. He is an incredibly strong person, father, and husband, whose life was completely altered overnight. After seeing his battle and how it has affected every aspect of his life, I slather that sunblock on my kids and am glad that we are better education and have better diagnostic tools.
