Go to Laupahoehoe Point. Beautiful rocky coastal area north of Hilo without that many people. And take the narrow scenic
road downslope from the main highway north of Hilo. It's really beautiful, and there is a place with a tall bridge over a deep pool of water where people jump off the bridge. Right at that spot there is a tunnel through the mountain where the river comes through into that deep pool. You can also hike down pretty easily from the bridge to some rocks that are only ~10' above the water and much more comfortable jumping.

A bit farther north is the Wai'pi'o Valley overlook, which is absolutely stunning. One of the most beautiful viewpoints I've ever seen – especially if you can catch it around sunset. Of course, that's the best time to be at Laupahoehoe, too.

Lastly, Waimea isn't all that far away. If they are doing any rodeo events at Parker Ranch, I'd recommend going to that. It's a total small town, family oriented thing to catch if you want to get a glimpse into the life of real people there.
