You definitely received the money. You also received the company match in a tax deferred situation.

The only difference I see is one is pre-tax and one is tax deferred. If you are smart enough to be selecting your 401k option, you should be smart enough to not be surprised by and account for taxes due.

Maybe I’m just not coddling enough.
