Your mascot doesn't have to be indigenous to your locale to work (Pittsburgh Penguins??) And an NHL team is not a college team, which probably has greater pressure to do this because school populations tend to be local/regional. It's great if a potential regional symbol fits into a slot that way, but nobody wants to see "Pioneers," "Seagulls," or "Golden Spikes" — yikes. Especially in the NHL's marketing division, sorry.

Better to make the correlation between the mountains and snow, and Yetis would be great for that. Great mascot opportunity, too.
