That "defense" mechanism doesn't kick off until after the burn has happened.
At least that's what happened when I forgot sunscreen and a hat a few years ago and my scalp burned so badly that my head looked like a melted mushroom for a week or so afterward.

Sunlight is good for us. But like anything else too much can be harmful. And in the case of the sun, very harmful
