Generally, I give a lot more than two. Last time I gave six weeks notice.
I genuinely like the people I work with and try to make the transition as easy as possible. Its your friends that you leave behind that get hit hard. The most difficult part is getting your new employer to wait for you.

If someone has a current job and tells you they can start work on Monday, as good as that would be helpful to me and my people, I usually move on to the next candidate. I really don't want someone that selfish working with my team.

My bro worked for Microsoft and they all knew when you give notice they walk you out the door and pay you for that notice time. What he did instead was tell his boss he was leaving at three weeks, used the week to help as much as possible. Gave the official resignation notice to his boss on Friday night and even tried to help on Saturday before being cutoff from the system on Sunday. My brother is a good dude, making HUGE money building data centers and the kind of person I would want on my team.

I am a big believer in "what comes around, goes around" because I have never been treated unfairly by any of my eight post college employers, despite having a few bad bosses along the way.
