A comparison of the four new "small form factor" routers/gateways from Ubiquiti
This is a comparison of the new small form-factor router/gateway units only. Rack-mounted units are not included here.

Note: All can route IDS/IPS traffic at full Gigabit speeds

Unifi Express - $149 -https://store.ui.com/us/en/pro/category/all-unifi-cloud-gateways/products/ux

Positives:

  • Built-in WiFi 6 access point
  • UniFi Network built-in (must be managed by this Network instance if configured as a gateway)
  • Can operate as an access point only
  • Status display

Negatives:

  • Can manage only four additional UniFi devices (APs, switches, etc.)
  • Supports "only" 50 connected clients (likely not an issue in a home network)
  • Single LAN port

Gateway Lite - $129 - https://store.ui.com/us/en/pro/category/all-cloud-keys-gateways/products/uxg-lite

Positives:

  • Can be managed by self-hosted Network, Cloud Key or UniFi hosting

Negatives:

  • No built-in AP (not a negative for me)
  • No status display
  • Single LAN port

Cloud Gateway Ultra -$129 - https://store.ui.com/us/en/pro/category/all-unifi-cloud-gateways/products/ucg-ultra

Positives:

  • Built-in Network App (must be managed by this Network instance)
  • Built-in GbE 4-port LAN switch
  • Status display
  • Manages 30+ UniFi devices and 300+ clients

Negatives:

  • No built-in AP (not a negative for me)
  • Cannot be managed by self-hosted Network app or Cloud Key

Gateway Max - $199 - https://store.ui.com/us/en/pro/category/all-cloud-keys-gateways/products/uxg-max

Positives:

  • 1.5 Gbps IDS/IPS routing
  • 2.5 GbE WAN and LAN ports
  • Built-in 4-port switch

Negatives:

  • No built-in AP (not a negative for me)
  • No status display

All-in-One Alternative, Dream Router (not new gear) - $199 - https://store.ui.com/us/en/pro/category/all-unifi-cloud-gateways/products/udr

Positives:

  • Router, AP and Switch in a single unit (if you like that)
  • Built-in Network app
  • Can run two more apps like Protect (for cameras)
  • Card slot for NVR (camera video) storage

Negatives:

  • Max IDS/IPS speed of 700 Mbps
  • Can feel sluggish running multiple apps and with multiple connected clients

Pesonally, I use the Cloud Gateway Ultra (replaced my older USG) which, for me, is the best of the bunch.
