NEVER check a bag. If you are going overseas maybe, but I have done a week
of travel no problem with a carry on.
The new carryon are smaller but get a good suitcase. Look for one that has a warranty. If you are in Norther Utah, there is a place in North Salt Lake that I bought my suitcase from with lifetime warranty. And it is a carry on but bigger than all the new carry on.
Also get a good backpack and one that has a strap that will go over the handle of your suitcase so you can put it there in the airport.
I prefer one with lots of pockets so I can keep stuff separate and I know where it all is. Easy to remember and just open that pocket for say charging cord or something else.

Get pre-check... Clear is a waste. Sign up for an airline CC and ask the company if you can buy on personal card.
