I used to see Greg Kite almost daily near the CougarEat. Yes, he stood out in a crowd. I was only in Jr. High when Kresimir went through BYU and was shorter, but Kite and Greg Ostertag are the two guys that I felt dwarfed by when standing next to them. Anyway, it made me a little nostalgic since 1981 was probably my favorite year for BYU basketball and Kite was an important part of that team. I learned or relearned a few things.
- Kite was recruited by Duke, Kentucky, and UCLA, among others, but chose BYU.
- Greg spent 12 seasons in the NBA, only five of those with the Celtics where he was part of two championship teams.
- He came back to BYU in 1997 as an assistant coach
- Greg and wife have adopted 10 kids - very commendable.
- He currently resides in Florida and is Commissioner of the Florida Basketball Association
Anyway, I'm not sure Kite gets the credit he deserves as a BYU alum, probably because he played in the shadow of Danny Ainge and Fred Roberts. We used to call him "Vanilla Thunder" ala Darryl Dawkins back then.
Kudos to Greg for being an important part of BYU basketball lore...
