Corn Pop Intervention Needed
Attempting to check in on Denver's first OTA
Yeah, wasn't really able to do it. Nobody's really got anything aside from their title that says they are reporting on the OTA, and then they give speculative commentary based on...nothing cause they know nothing about what happened today.

Like any team that doesn't yet know who the opening day starter at QB is yet, that competition is going to get the lion's share of the coverage. Current thoughts on how things stand based on the same knowledge that everybody else is seemingly putting out there about today's OTA (which is no new knowledge since apparently nothing is known about it):

Stidham: he's a journeyman barely worthy of holding a clipboard. Perhaps he improves this season, perhaps not. My guess is the Broncos wouldn't be wasting any time with Zach if they thought Stidham was a capable place holder for Nix going into this season.

Nix: "Oh, he's going to start. There's no way he's not starting." Yeah, I'm not yet sold on that take that's rather lazy. "Oh, he's the most experienced QB ever to come out of college." Awesome, so he ran a pro-style offense, then, right? Right? No? Alright then, he's got a learning curve in addition to the weakest arm in the QB room. Nothing wrong with the weakest arm if he proves more effective and more accurate than the other two, but it's certainly not an advantage. I'm not sold that Nix will be ready to start an NFL game this season, but it's probably more likely than not that he'll get thrown to the wolves at some point. Just not game 1.

Wilson: He was brought for two reasons: Stidham doesn't inspire, and the Jets were willing to almost give him away. But contrary to the link I'll post below, he was not brought in to be a special project by Peyton and is therefore already on the shelf for this season. Zach has a single year left on his contract. He's the same age as Nix. There is no way that Peyton was ever thinking, "Hey, I'm drafting Nix, but let me go get this QB castoff so that I can turn him into a multi-year (as in decade plus long) project so that he can be my future starter after I've retired and Nix has retired and.......Zach has retired as well given he's the same age as Nix." No, there is no looking to next year for Zach. He was brought in specifically to compete with Stidham to be the sacrificial lamb for this year and this year only. Unless Zach has a pro-bowl (the good kind of pro-bowl, not the Huntley kind of pro-bowl) season, he'll be shopping as a free agent for a new team next season. Cause here's the deal: he's a free agent after this season. The Bronco's will have zero value tied to him. They won't own him and therefore can't trade him. They have absolutely no reason whatsoever to do anything for him that will increase his value in the league outside of Zach winning QB1 and proving on the field he can play. If he doesn't do that, he might not even make the 53-man roster. That's how much the Bronco's have invested in Zach right now. Next to nothing, so if he's not looking like he's going to add value to this season's team, he might be looking for a new team sooner than we think.

One more thing on Wilson. The league views him as garbage. Peyton is not going to put his reputation on the line if Zach is only looking average in practice. Zach has to look not just better than Stidham, but better than an average NFL starting QB to beat out Stidham, or they'll just stick with Stidham for the sacrificial lamb role. Peyton's not going to take all the "We told you so" heat for putting Zach out there if Zach is looking like a below average starting QB.
