Self preservation might include reporting the crime (if it that's actually what's going on--e.g., stealing by deceit)
because if he knows about the crime, has a lucrative business relationship with the guy who's profiting from the crime, and it comes out later that he knew and didn't report it, it starts looking suspicious.
