It's straight from the manufacturer. It's like they are trying to absolve
themselves of any responsibility if the package goes missing, or gets damaged. The insurance is through a third party and any claims would be made directly to that third party.

I briefly looked and FedEx and UPS seem to offer insurance up to $100 as a standard practice. From there it is pretty reasonable, like $3-4 for the next $200 worth and another $1.50 per $100 after that. So, I would guess the manufacturer is getting a kickback from the insurance company.
