To make that work, Chad needed evidence that: (1) he had no idea what they were up to, and (2) when he became aware something was wrong (e.g., my girlfriend's kids have disappeared without explanation), he sounded the alarm, called law enforcement, etc.

As for (1), there is plenty of evidence he was an active co-conspirator. As for (2), the lack of any evidence to this effect is telling.
