we rented bikes in SF too. was great fun
all over the Presidio and the Fisherman's Wharf area. We went about 1/3 way over Golden Gate.
We even went up the hill (pushing part way) to be able to ride down Lombard St. My kids complained going up, but 5 yrs later now they still point out Lombard St in tv/movies and say "we biked down there."
