When BYU came into the WCC many fans and even some of the players were confident that BYU would reign as the Basketball power of the conference due to the competition they were playing in the MWC at the time. Yes Gonzaga was king prior to BYU showing up, but BYU fans were confident that the crown would shift. BYU actually struggled in the WCC, and the domination that was expected never really panned out. There were a few golden moments especially vs Gonzaga, but things did not turn out the way they expected.

Fast forward to today. Utah is about to enter the Big XII conference after spending a decade plus in the PAC12. Writers, fans and some of the players have expectations of dominating the league and being the football power of the Big XII. Most of the articles about the the future of the conference have Utah listed as number one. So the comparison is if the Big XII is to Utah as the WCC was to BYU.

If that is true that means that Utah will not dominate and might face the possibility of not even winning a conference championship just like BYU was never able to do while in the WCC.
