BYU has a history…good basketball coaches where will Kev rank…Top 3? Top2?
Roger Reid was a very good basketball coach. His teams played defense.
Problem with Roger is when he had both his sons on the team. Robbie was actually a better player but Reid was playing Randy over players like Ryan Cuff. Ryan Cuff was so much farther advanced than his teammates in his passing. They were not ready for his passes. Roger would yank him out of the game every time pass bounced off a teammates chest…..Ryan would’ve been given a chance, the players would’ve got more use to his passes. The players in Richfield thrived as they learned to be ready at all times for a pass From Ryan.

If his sons had not been on the team, Roger would’ve probably lasted another 10+ years at BYU and go down as one of the better coaches of all time.

He went on to have good years at Snow College and SUU. His brother Duke was a great coach also and coached at UVU.

Sean Badley would’ve likely played one more year of BYU….. Had this not have happened.

The Reid’s are great people and great for the state of Utah. Randy is a great guy and he was decent enough player but he should not have been playing over Ryan Cuff. I’m sure Randy would agree.

Robbie was a very good basketball player

BYU has been fun to watch as they run and gun and get up and down the floor. Made for a lot of 20 win seasons since over the years had exciting moments in the Marriott center…… To win in the postseason you need to play defense. Roger Reid was probably the best defensive coach BYU has ever had.

Doug Allred was a fantastic coach who coached at Delta high school and Dixie college. He was also the athletic Director at Dixie College for many years. Doug really liked Dave Rose and his character and offensive game. He even advised Guy Lewis to take a chance on him at Houston. Doug once told someone that Dave Rose was a heck of a player and that he never backed down even from Allred’s in your face coaching style. He said Rose loved to play offense, but he didn’t like to play defense and Allred went on to say it shows in his teams style of play. Allred also said that he loved Dave Rose and was very proud of him and thought he did a phenomenal job at BYU. He just liked a little more defense, actually a lot more defense.

Dave Rose is a class act. Along with Cleveland….He made BYU relevant again…. his tenure and record speaks for itself. His body at work has to put him as the number one coach of all time at BYU. And the caliber of opponents that he was playing against. Games against Gonzaga and San Diego State among others are going to go down in history as some of BYU‘s greatest moments. Maybe Jimmer Fredette needs a little credit for putting a shine on Dave Rose too. Rose was a dignified coach and ran a good program.

Pope was the right guy to replace Rose at the right time. Pretty much did what we asked him to do. In many ways he overachieved, especially on recruiting. His endgame decisions were questionable quite often. But overall, Popes a net plus.

Hopefully Kevin Young can guide us through the next phase. I feel he is better fit for what we are trying to do now than Pope. That is no disrespect to Pope. He served his purpose. Now it’s time to go onto bigger and better things with style and class and a real powerful plan.

Frank Arnold and Steve Cleveland were both very good basketball coaches. They just didn’t stick around very long.

Ladell Anderson was also a very good basketball coach. He had much success at BYU…. If I remember correctly, he had a very good team that was ranked in the top five for a while….also had a stint as the head coach of the Utah Stars of the ABA. His son Larry also did a great job at North Sanpete and Snow College.

Stan Watts is a legend, I didn’t see him or his teams play. I believe his teams success is a big reason the Marriott Center was built. He won two national titles (at the time NIT) was at least equal to NCAA in clout/prestige.
