I learned it from a famous conductor who learned it from William Dawson himself. Dawson said that most people sang it wrong: a bit too slow and kind of sing-songy or swingy/bouncy. He explained that it was a song about people whose lives were so awful they were singing a prayer to die so they could go home to be with Jesus. That really hit me. I felt the song differently afterward.
