First of all, maybe you can't read? I didn't make any point about
the backup QB's playing mostly against backups. So your comment is
actually the mute one.
McEuen is not a better QB than Gaskins at this point, I don't know
where you're getting that opinion. Maybe you ought to at least
learn how to spell McEuen's name before you so glowingly, although
inaccurately, tout him as the backup QB?
Also, before you claim that the coaches favor McEuen maybe you
could read what the HC, Bronco Mendenhall... you may have heard of
him... actually has to say about who is the backup QB:
>>> When asked about the backup quarterback situation, BYU
coach Bronco Mendenhall said, "At this point it's a little early,
but Brenden Gaskins last year kind of emerged on the scene in the
spring game and really from there didn't have many opportunities to
be developed at least in game experiences. So spring is more
important time than even fall for backup quarterback as we can
distribute the reps more evenly and put him in more contact
situations than we can in fall camp so we think this is a huge
spring for Brenden. Kurt McEuen is behind him and Stephen Covey, we
won't be able to get them all equal reps, but finding a backup
quarterback just like identifying our two-deep at all positions is
one of the primary objects in spring." <<<
Also it might interest you that the QB coach, Brandon Doman... you
may have heard of him also... says that Gaskins is the backup QB,
so long as he continues to earn the job as this excerpt from an
article about spring practice:
>>> Cooper ended up transferring to Oregon, and Gaskins
spent the 2007 season backing up Hall, appearing in six games. He
completed 2-of-4 passes for 31 yards and an interception. During
the winter, coaches awarded Gaskins a scholarship.
"Brendan's been very consistent," said quarterbacks coach Brandon
Doman. "He's continued to work hard, he's continued to be a team
player. Right now, he's the backup, but he's got to continue to
earn that. I wouldn't say that's completely solidified. He gets a
lot of reps right now and he's done well."
Hall and Gaskins took all the snaps during the first week of spring
practice, but others will join the mix as the spring continues.
Behind Gaskins are Kurt McEuen, a sophomore from Heber City, and
redshirt freshman Stephen Covey, a Provo native who returned from a
mission in January. Redshirt freshman Jason Munns is participating
in spring drills, though he plans to leave for a mission before the
2008 season begins. "We won't be able to get (the quarterbacks) all
equal reps, but finding a backup quarterback, just like identifying
our two-deep at all positions, is one of our primary objectives of
spring," Mendenhall said.
Doman likes McEuen and all the QBs he has to work with.
"Kurt has been in the program for two years," he said. "He has
really done a good job this spring; I've been really happy with
him. He'll be a real good third quarterback and someone to pressure
Brenden for the backup job." <<<
You might take note that Doman has Gaskins as the backup QB and
McEuen as the third quarterback.
And finally, this article about the spring game identifies Gaskins
as the backup QB:
>>>In the scrimmage, backup quarterback Brenden Gaskins
completed 4 of 7 passes for 56 yards. Kurt McEuen was 7-for-10 for
70 yards and an interception while Stephen Covey was 2-for-3 for
six yards and an interception <<<
All that said, Gaskins is going into the fall as the backup QB as
long as he continues to hang onto it. Doesn't mean he'll keep the
job, we'll see in the fall as is the case with all positions... the
players have to continue to earn them.
