As many on this board know, I'm frustrated that the defense had its best showing of the year in the first game and has seemed to regress since then. That incidently, was the game that Bronco admitted they did something different than usual and where much more aggressive.

But all the calls and complaints about Coach Hill did just give me a sense of deja vu.....they are the same type of comments we heard about Ken Schmidtt and the "boring, 4-3 unemotional, bend but dont break" defense he ran. That was followed by Bronco running the 3-3-5 which we all loved for a bit because it was aggressive....before deciding that it didnt work with our talent. That was followed by the 3-4 which we all loved for awhile and which is now aggravating to all of us.

Don't get me wrong, I dont like what I am seeing from this defense at all. But we've gone through 3 D coordinators and numerous defensive schemes and we always seem to be frustrated with them as fans.The consistent thing through all of this has been the athletes we have. I'd love to see an Oklahoma type effort and scheme every game. But part of me is also painfully aware that decent teams putting up big offensive numbers against BYU is a not a new thing......it has happened for years against Schmidt's D, against Bronco's D and against Jaime Hill's D.

For whatever reason Schmidt, Bronco and now Hill have all decided the best chance we have is a more fundamental, conservative approach. If 1 defensive coordinator felt that way it's easy to argue with....but 3 defensive coordinators have now felt that way. So while I'd love to see us be much more aggressive I do temper that desire with the knowledge that 3 people who get paid to run defenses all feel/felt like it doesnt give us the best chance to win.....
