Um. No. The BYU fan was taking pictures of

a bunch of Ute fans behaving like complete idiots. He had no idea Whit's family was nearby. In fact he had no idea what Whit's family even looked like.

Whit's son saw him taking pictures and mistakenly assumed the BYU fan was taking pictures of his little sisters crying. So, Whit's son went over, grabbed the BYU fan's blackberry and threw it into the crowd.

The BYU fan then asked a U of U police officer to do something about it. I don't know if the BYU fan knew the U of U police officer was a U of U police officer or not. The U police officer informed him that the U police officer was only there for security for the U team and family and that he had no jurisdiction in LES.

So, the BYU fan tells one of his friends to go get security. Whit's son starts to pull a Brave Sir Robbin and bravely run away, so the BYU fan grabs him to hold him there until the police can arrive.

Whit's wife turns and sees what's happening at this point. She mistakenly assumes (family trait on that day apparently) that her son was being attacked without any provocation. So, she goes over and goes crazy on the BYU fan (including clawing and scratching his face). The only contact the BYU fan made with Whit's wife was to defend himself.

The police were very aware of the whole situation. A freelance photographer took pictures of the whole thing. Provo police told the BYU fan he had good reason to press charges against the Whittinghams and that they had a very good case against them.

Unfortunately someone leaked the BYU fan's name to the paper. He started receiving harassing telephone calls, including some death threats. Add the calls to the fact that he actually had enough compassion on Whit's son that he didn't want him to have a record that might prevent him from going on a mission or cause him other problems with later jobs or school admissions and the BYU fan decided to drop it.

If Whit is telling people his wife was assaulted, I'm calling him a bald-faced liar.
