Not so fast, my friend!
Notre Dame has NEVER played an FCS team and largely avoids playing non-BCS schools. Although we definitely try to play a good schedule, BYU has and will continue to thrive on matchups against Utah State, Hawaii, and Boise St. and the likes of Southern Miss, Houston, and Eastern Carolina. These types of teams don't make Notre Dame's radar.
Also, I am not focusing on the backwater nature of the majority of the Big 12 slate, the more significant point is whether the Big 12 matches BYU's fan base. Annual games in Iowa, Kansas, and Lubbock, Texas do not cater to BYU's alumni and fans. You will see more BYU fans in Las Cruces and San Jose than you ever would at the above locations. This is also why the WCC is such a great fit for the Olympic sports. The vast majority of BYU's non-Utah alumni and fans are on the West Coast.
