Because they're interested in creating art
as opposed to cashing in on blockbusters?

If you think a movie that others think is great is in fact mediocre or bad, you should read up on it. There's a lot of art that benefits from educating yourself regarding it.

For example, many on here love Les Mis, but disparage the extended digressions about sewers, etc. But if Hugo was a great author, surely there must be a reason for their inclusion, right? Dig around for explanations and you'll plenty of interesting food for thought. For example:
