Bronco vs Whit - overall rankings

Been doing some more analysis on the MRatings Composite for the years that Bronco has been head coach. In the process, noticed some interesting things regarding Bronco and Whitt. First, here are the final ratings for BYU and Utah during the tenure of each head coach:

  • 2012-2013:  34, 67
  • 2011-2012:  32, 39
  • 2010-2011:  48, 22
  • 2009-2010:  13, 23
  • 2008-2009:  27, 5
  • 2007-2008:  13, 31
  • 2006-2007:  13, 48
  • 2005-2006:  56, 51

Average ranking:  29.5, 35.75

Median ranking (to eliminate noise):  29.5, 35

Here are some things to note about Utah:  Utah's ranking has followed a V-curve, peaking 4 years after Urban left and also corresponding to Gary Anderson's last year, and going downhill since.  I think Kyle's been dealt some bad luck, and created some bad luck of his own.  However, unless he does something different, the trend for this year will be worse than #67.  Perhaps bringing in a good OC will change it, but this could be the worst Utah team in a long time.

Now about BYU:  After Bronco's first season, we seemed to hit a nice, low valley with rankings of 13, 13, 27, 13.  Pretty consistently good.  Now, after the disruption of 2010 with dual/Freshman QBs, we have seemed to hit another flat area of ranking in the 30-35 region.  This year, that may be our likely destination again as we try to rebuild the O-line and kicking game, and as Hill masters the offense.  The defense will probably not do as well as last year in total points and yardage simply because the offense will be moving at a quicker pace, with likely more throwing.  It would be nice to see some defensive efficiency stats, such as yards/play, points/play, and other such metrics.

Finally, about BYU vs Utah:  based on rankings and home field, four years we should have won, two years they should have won (2008, 2010) and two years are toss-ups (2005, 2011). As I've posted before, I find this game is Bronco's biggest failing, especially the last two years.  If he is serious about building a program capable of winning the national title, he needs to take seriously the state title.
