Rankings are biased towards big name historical teams...
I don't know any reasonable person who believes that BYU was 35 spots better than Utah last year. If you look at SOS, common opponents, head to head, or other more subjective measures they were about equal. BYU has some historical cache and ended the season with a bowl victory so they ended up where they are, but rankings are not scientific at all.
