We do know that Utah went 1-7 against top half teams
Utah went 1-7 against teams in the top half of the rankings, and none of these teams were ranked higher than #15 Oregon St. Meanwhile, BYU came within a FG at #3 Notre Dame - clearly the most impressive game for either team.

Utah was on the same level as Georgia Tech and San Diego St, both of which we handled on the road. Note that the Jackets beat USC both on the scoreboard and in total yardage, first downs, and were never behind. Compare that to Utah-USC where the Trojans dominated in yardage and first downs, and were up by 17 points for most of the 4th quarter on Utah's field. Similarly, SDSU beat Boise St. on the blue turf, while Boise has won it's last ~6 games against Pac teams.

There's lots of twists and turns to a season. Take them in aggregate, and Utah did not perform very well last year. It turns out that BYU played 7 games against top half teams, and won three of them. That is a pretty good indication we were competitive at that level last year, while Utah with a 1-7 record was not.
