That's why unearned runs are excluded. If you take out errors and poor

fielding, runs scored are generally the result of bad pitching. Again, I don't think it's the greatest measure in the world, but it's a good part of the overall picture. Looking at ERA, WHIP, FIP, etc. all together gives a great picture of a pitcher's efficacy.
