I think ERA is a more useful stat

There are plenty of times when you pitch around batters and walk them. That would count against you using WHIP. I want a pitcher who knows how to pitch with runners on base and especially in scoring position...some pitchers are a lot better at it than others. At the end of the day, it's all about runs allowed.
