I don't think anybody is suggesting this model is perfect ... or even super great. However, I found it to be interesting and insightful. Your claim about steals being such a poor measure of defensive proficiency is probably overstated. Iverson may not have been great in some aspects of defense, but apparently he was quite good at others.
