but (I imagine), based on thousands of steals by hundreds of players and the overall affect they have on the game. Clearly someone can be a poor defender and get a lot of steals, but when you take thousands of samples and create a model for it, the "rule" takes over and the outliers have less of an impact.

I'm not a stats guy, so I don't know the correct lingo, but I think I get this conceptually.
