Was it ever that big of a deal? Doesn't mean people didn't want to win and
weren't more interested in watching crappy games because of it. I mean, look how crazy this board got with the whole 6thfan thing. Everyone wants to be a champion even if it doesn't mean anything in the big scheme of things.
I have stated several times that I am very happy being independent with the potential of playing a better, more relevant schedule. But if 2014 becomes more the norm than the anomaly, I don't think BYU will survive long term as an independent. Most fans just aren't into spending a lot of money to see mediocre football with nothing on the line.
