As always, with historical sports, you compare with what the athlete did compared to the competition of his day. Babe Ruth is considered one of, if not the best slugger of all time. And we all know that he didn't face the competition that hitters face today. Same things goes for JAck Dempsey, Sammy Baugh, Ted Williams, etc., etc.
