Judging by the bikes and plastic basketball stands, most of the people that seem to buy these homes have young children. Most of the newer homes, unless they are a legitimate custom home are just slapped together too.

We have an older home. We have a .52 lot and it was $40k less than a house of the same size on a .12 acre lot. Maybe I am old fashion, but I would rather buy an older home with a huge lot and do upgrades with the money that I save.
