You can get by without a passport, however....
If you depart and return to the same port, you will not need a passport, at least to Mexico, but I think it will apply to the Caribbean as well. WE have had friends and family cruise without passports
However, if you for some reason miss the boat, you will be in a mess as you cannot fly back home without a passport. My recommendations would be to get passports for all traveling.
