There is no shortage of unused land in the southwest deserts
If solar was all that it was cracked up to be why isn't Arizona going 100% solar?
Answer is that solar cannot be relied on for base electricity supply. So no matter how much solar power you install you must still maintain a full supply of coal / gas / nuclear or hydro power.
Oh, and there is the other problem that people still need and want electricity when the sun goes down.
