posted in this thread. I would say that at least half of those people don't watch ANY yewt games, but instead wear it because it's "cool" in West side S.L. Valley and is a serious sign that you are against "the establishment" (i.e. LDS Church, even though you live in Utah). This is a very real thing. I live in S.L. County and see this all the time.
Wearing Ute gear in Utah is not only a sign you are a Ute "fan" or being trendy, but also acts as a serious sign of rebellion against the LDS church, much like people that begin smoking in this state as a teenager when they stop going to church (against their parents wishes) as a blatent sign that they are "cool" and not Mormon. I've noticed this for years, but especially after the 2003 season when the Utes started winning and simultaneously BYU losing during the Crowton years...
As a side note, no, I'm not saying that true, real Ute fans don't exist. I work with, and have friends in S.L. County that are die-hard real Ute fans that actually go to games and some have even had season tickets since before Weinerwagon became the coach for two years and dumped them. However, this is a small majority. Wearing Ute gear in S.L. County (and Davis as well) is a serious fashion statement after the 2004 and 2008 undefeated years, so along with the people that wear it because of the rebellion thing (but don't give a yewt about the Utes when a game is on) there is also this reason. It will be interesting to see how long that popularity exists when the yewts don't go to a bowl again for the third strait year this year and BYU has a 10 plus win season.
